Top Lip Tips

Let’s be honest, when it comes to skincare our lips always seem to get a raw deal. We’re quick to apply a basic balm, and that’s about all the acknowledgement we give them. However, when it comes to lipsticks we spend a fortune. But what we really need to ask ourselves is; what use is an expensive lipstick if we’re applying it to an uneven and unloved canvas?

To get the most out of your lippie it’s important to prepare your lips properly. You don’t need to spend heaps of money on expensive products, but there are a few steps you can take to a achieve lovely lips.

Here are our top three lip tips, that you all should be following...

Exfoliate Your Lips

The first step to flawless lips is to remove all the dead skin. There's seriously nothing more unattractive than flaky lips or patchy lipstick. By removing any dead skin cells, you're leaving behind a smooth surface that your lipstick will glide beautiful on to, and that will absorb all the goodness from your lip balms and butters.

You don't have to spend a small fortune on an expensive scrub, you can make your own at home (see our DIY lip scrubs here), but if you don't fancy that, LUSH do a fantastic Bubblegum scrub for only £5.50.

Exfoliate your lips at least once a week and you'll soon see the difference.

Invest in a Good Lips Balm or Butter

Look for products rich in Shea butter or lanolin, these all help to condition the skin. It's worth investing in your balm, as you want to make sure it's hydrating and nourishing, and not just sitting on the surface.

Also, in hot weather or on holiday, make sure your lip products contain SPF! It's not just your skin that burns. Keeping hydrated is vital for soft and supple lips.

Use a Primer

Primer isn't just for your foundation! Applying a lip primer will also improve to appearance and condition of your lips. They'll help hold your lip colour better, and improve the texture too.

We love MAC's lip primer, it's gives you lips a kiss of moisture and your lipstick applies perfectly on top.

If you want to enhance your lip colour, use a complementary lip liner. Define the edge, and feather into the centre of the lips. Then top up with your favourite lipstick to enjoy a fuller longer wearing colour.
